Interview: NKOTB’s Joey McIntyre on his new show, ‘Return of the Mac’

Pop TV’s new series, “Return of the Mac,” stars one of your favorite teen heartthrobs from the ‘90s, Joey McIntyre. If magazines like Tiger Beat and Teen were before your time, all you’d have to do is run a Google search to see the multitude of covers plastered with pictures of a teenage McIntyre, along with the rest of his New Kids On The Block bandmates, to know that these guys are pop culture legends.

On Thursday, April 6, AXS joined the cast of the new show, along with the cast of “Hollywood Darlings,” for the Pop TV premiere and what was the best ‘90s party anyone has seen, well, since the ‘90s. The event was packed with a lot of familiar faces and the guest list read straight out of the TGIF lineup.

AXS had the pleasure of speaking with Joey McIntyre and his family, all of whom star in the reality-esque comedy. The sitcom is loosely based on the real-life McIntyre and follows his journey as he balances his family life and his career – which, in the series, has led him to hosting a talk show on the Comfy Channel. The cast includes Adam Ray, Jamie Denbo, Katie Wee, Punam Patel, Jordan Black and has some special guest appearances from other ‘90s favorites like Joey Lawrence along with fellow New Kid Donnie Wahlberg and his wife, Jenny McCarthy. McIntyre joked at the premiere that if you want to get anything done in Hollywood, you call a Wahlberg.

We asked the “Return of the Mac” star if he’s always had a thing for comedy. He told AXS, “I mean, on one end I’m probably a sarcastic wise guy and on the other end people think I’m pretty funny so, I try to balance that out.” He laughed, “But yeah, I enjoy it.”

As far as what fans can expect to see from the show, McIntyre said, “Hopefully they will not be able to get enough of ‘Return of the Mac’ and we’ll do a second season. You know, we’re excited to be a part of it. The kids had fun. We would come down in the morning and there would be a film crew in our kitchen. That was fun for them.” He added, “New Kids has been great, but throughout my career I’ve done a bunch of acting so it was nice to get this opportunity to make my own show. It’s been a wonderful experience. To share it with the family and for us to be on the journey together was really special.”

We then had to know, just what is Joey McIntyre’s own personal favorite NKOTB song? “I’m partial to ‘Please Don’t Go Girl,’” he chuckled. “You know, for a lot of reasons.”

It appears Joey McIntyre still has the right stuff. And you can see it on “Return of the Mac.” The new series debuts tonight, Wednesday, April 12, at 8:30/7:30c, following the premiere of “Hollywood Darlings” on Pop TV.

New Kids On The Block is also currently on tour. You can get your tickets here at AXS.
